Individual Pilates Classes

Initial Assessment

This is a pre-requisite here at The Abbey Physiotherapy and Spine Centre before commencing any Pilates classes. This is because to get the best results for you, we need to get to the root of any issues you may have and find out your goals in order to create your personalised clinical pilates programme. For those who have never heard of pilates before never mind completed a class, this initial assessment will put any and all fears to bed on things like technique and equipment used.

What is Clinical Pilates

Movement, and specifically controlled movement, is the physiotherapist’s cup of tea. Physiotherapists are uniquely placed to build upon the foundation that regular pilates provides people through our knowledge of the human body and how it should move.

Your pilates routine will be run by a chartered physiotherapist with specialist postgraduate qualifications in pilates, and will be specifically tailored to you based on your initial assessment. The focus will take into account your previous medical history, the history of your current condition, your current level of exercise, and your future goals whatever they may be. Thus… clinical pilates!

Why Clinical Pilates?

This is a question that is often asked. The main difference between clinical pilates and general pilates is the extent of training the instructor has undertaken.

The major difference is in the extent of knowledge in anatomy and underlying pathologies of the body. Chartered physiotherapists undertake assessments on a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, which allows them to adjust, modify and choose the most accurate Pilates exercises for an individual. This is especially important when dealing with pathology of the spine and also in terms of the specific needs of both the pregnant and post natal mother. It allows us to accurately and specifically adapt exercises if an injury is present or flares up.

Why go to a physiotherapist for Pilates?

A trained physiotherapist prescribes and supervises a Clinical Pilates class, whereas an instructor for Regular Pilates only recommends a generalised program of exercises to individuals.

Both types of Pilates are based on the original theories and practices of Joseph Pilates and are exceptional ways to improve strength, flexibility and control.
